Review

Neil Hartling is the operator of Nahanni River Adventures in Whitehorse,
Yukon. Other writing credits include Nahanni: River of Gold … River of
Dreams. Terry Parker is a wilderness photographer based in Fernie,
British Columbia.

This book briefly describes the rivers that are part of Hartling’s
guiding business and experience in British Columbia, Yukon, Alaska,
Northwest Territories, and Nunavut: Stikine, Alsek/Tatshenshini, Snake,
Wind, South Nahanni, Horton, Coppermine, and Burnside. Compensating for
the sketchiness of the river descriptions are Parker’s 80-plus superb
colour photographs and information on the ecology and natural/human
history of the area.

It would be too cynical to describe Alaska to Nunavut solely as a
promotional vehicle for Hartling’s business. Rather, it serves as a
teaser for armchair adventurers, coaxing them into action through its
breathtaking photographs and enthralling text. More importantly, it’s
a book about conservation. By being the ambassadors for the North,
Hartling and Parker hope to transform every one of us into its
guardians.
