Review
Alberta-based writer Bill Corbett, author of several Alberta road trip
and outdoor activity guides, updates his previously published edition of
Day Trips from Calgary (1994) with nine new trips and beautiful colour
photographs.
This well-written and expertly researched guide is just the right
companion to take with you on a day’s adventure from Calgary. There
are 76 trips, the majority of which are within two hours’ driving
distance from Calgary. The trips are divided into four sections (north,
east, south, and west of Calgary) in an attempt to entice Calgarians and
visitors to consider all roads leading out of the city, and not just the
Trans-Canada to Banff. Many of the trips described are loop trips, or
those that offer an alternative route back to Calgary to maximize your
adventure potential. A reasonable number of supplementary interpretive
walks are included where appropriate; the walks are generally between
one and two kilometres and can be attempted by the average family.
Visit a sheep farm and wool mill north of Calgary, or an ancient
sundial wheel used by Plains Indians to the south. The author has
provided numerous notes and tips for each trip, including such important
details as operating hours of information centres and museums, phone
numbers, and current prices for attraction admissions. Easy-to-use
hand-drawn maps and historical anecdotes appear throughout, and each
trip includes a route and the return distance in kilometres.
This compact guide is a perfect gift for Calgarians or anyone planning
a trip to Southern Alberta.
