Review

Richard Crouse is a film critic and the host of the television show
Reel-to-Reel. In this guide, he shares with readers his own personal
take on underrated favourite films that audiences may have missed. The
films are not necessarily obscure (this reviewer had seen 20 of the 100)
and range from the 1930s to present day, including both mainstream
(Foreign Correspondent, Stage Door) and offbeat (High School
Confidential, Cane Toads: An Unnatural History). The selections, mainly
American and British movies, are slightly heavy on the schlock horror
side (Toxic Avenger).

The entries are basically film reviews, written in a chatty style but
displaying a sound knowledge of film history and trivia (although The
Krays is surely not “the only Oedipal gangster movie”—hasn’t
Crouse heard of White Heat?). They might have been improved by a more
comprehensive list of film credits, some of which are mentioned in
passing within the reviews.

There is a bibliography of books, newspaper and magazine articles, and
press kits, but there are no in-text references, so it is not clear
exactly why these particular items are included and sometimes even which
films they refer to.

Quibble aside, as an entertaining guide for movie buffs who want to
discover some hidden treasures or refresh their memories of old
favourites, The 100 Best Movies You’ve Never Seen fulfills its
promise.
