Review

Aimed at pre-service physical education teachers, this book provides
useful information on the roles and responsibilities of teachers within
the context of Ontario provincial education regulations and guidelines.
The author’s main objective is to encourage the pre-service teacher to
reflect on his or her experiences in a manner that will lead to improved
practice.

Chapter 2 focuses on student assessment and evaluation. The pre-service
teacher is encouraged to use alternative assessments that stress
fairness, equity, and informal communication with all stakeholders at
the classroom level. Chapter 3 provides detailed examples of lesson,
unit, and annual plans and teaching/learning strategies. Ryan relies
heavily on Muska Mosston’s Spectrum of Teaching Styles (Teaching
Physical Education, 1966) and advocates moving beyond command teaching
to self-directed learning. The final chapter describes self-reflection
as a means of describing, evaluating, and revising one’s teaching
practices. Here Ryan presents three examples of pre-service teaching
experiences in which the practice teachers describe their practicum
experiences, evaluate the experience in a reflective manner, and
describe the steps they would take to improve the teaching/learning
experience.

A highlight of this meticulously researched book is the 75-plus
references, which span a 70-year period.
