Review

The Spelling Teacher’s Book of Lists is a resource for any classroom
teacher. In addition to tips on how to use word lists, how to teach
spelling, and how to create your own lists, the book lists the spelling
trouble spots.

The section on consonants covers, among other things, the different
ways to spell individual sounds, the use of double consonants, and
silent letters. The chapter on vowels includes the expected vowel lists
and sections on various combinations with difficult consonant sounds.
Other sections address confusable spellings and word building. A chapter
titled “Evolution of Language” lists abbreviations that are now
words, borrowings, and brand names, among other categories, to help
teachers clarify the seemingly haphazard patterns of English spelling.

Now in its second edition, Jo Phenix’s book should not be missed.
