Review

Andrew Smith says that his objective in Paddling the Tobeatic is to
describe the rivers of southwestern Nova Scotia, provide historical
context, and encourage people to paddle them and learn about the area.
He has certainly achieved his goal in this exhaustive volume, which
covers what is a surprisingly small territory. Out-of-province readers
will be astonished at the paddling utopia that awaits, with
opportunities for all skill levels. From paddling tips to car-parking
advice and local history, Paddling the Tobeatic covers it all.

Regional maps are provided, and detailed sketches of tricky sections
are also included. Paddlers will want to arm themselves with the
Canadian Geographic Survey topographical maps, which (although sometimes
dated) are the gold standard.

Paddling enthusiasts will appreciate Smith’s friendly tone (he’s
even philosophical about bugs) and will definitely want to accept his
invitation to discover this paddling paradise.
