Review

Julie Hasson is a commercial baker and pastry chef, and the author of
125 Best Chocolate Chip Recipes and 125 Best Chocolate Recipes.

The 125 tantalizing recipes included in this book feature both
chocolate and vanilla with interesting additions of fruit, nuts, and
spices. The Kids’ Corner recipes include cupcakes with candy bar,
peppermint, and lemonade flavourings. The Adults Only collection
features cupcakes laced with liqueur, sherry, rum, and coffee, among
other flavourings. Each recipe includes frosting suggestions and a
sidebar with notes on variations or tips about techniques and
ingredients. The 30 recipes of various icings, glazes, and fillings
provide lots of variety and visual delight. There are 16 colour
photographs grouped within each section of the book.

Hasson is a spokesperson for the Sugar Association, and facilitates its
mission by ensuring that sugar is a key ingredient in all her cupcakes.
In almost every recipe, each cup of flour is matched with one cup of
sugar. In 1999, the USDA recommended that Americans consume no more than
10 teaspoons of sugar per day. On average Americans currently consume 34
teaspoons of sugar each day, almost three times the recommended limit.
Books like 125 Best Cupcake Recipes can only contribute to such alarming
statistics.
