Review

For nearly three decades, The Canadian Writer’s Market has been the
best go-to guide for both novice and seasoned writers in Canada. For
beginners, the guide offers advice on how to format a basic manuscript,
how to include proper postage on return envelopes, where to apply for
writing school, and which professional writing associations might be
best suited to their needs. For the advanced writer, the guide provides
up-to-date contact information for hundreds of Canadian writing markets,
where to apply for government grants, and the deadlines and entry
criteria for scores of writing competitions and awards.

Tooze’s writing is clear and concise, and the subject matter is
intelligently arranged into 11 chapters: “Consumer Magazines,”
“Literary and Scholarly Publications,” “Trade, Business, Farm and
Professional Publications,” “Daily Newspapers,” “Book
Publishers,” “Literary Agents,” “Writing Awards and
Competitions,” “Provincial and Federal Writer Support Programs,”
“Professional Development,” “Writers’ Organizations and Support
Agencies,” and “Resources.” A thorough index is included for quick
reference. At 454 pages, this is the largest, most comprehensive edition
yet and well worth the modest price for anyone who is serious about a
career in writing.
