Review

This small book chronicles 21 “love stories” under the following
chapter headings: “Convenient Arrangements,” “Tragic Romances,”
“Defying Convention,” “Unrequited Love,” “Passionate
Politicians,” “Scandalous Affairs,” and “Grow Old with Me.”
Samuel de Champlain, Alexander Graham Bell, John A. MacDonald, and
Admiral Horatio Nelson are among the notable names that appear in these
historical accounts—all but a couple take place in the 19th century or
earlier.

The historical records for some stories, like that of de Champlain
which dates from around 1610, are incomplete, leaving the author in the
unfortunate position of having to make suppositions, suggest possible
motives or actions, or rely on less-than-accurate accounts. Moreover,
many of the stories barely feel Canadian, with many of the featured
players citizens of other countries and much of the action taking place
outside the area of what is now Canada. Surely this country has better
stories to tell.
