Review

This 5th edition of Janet Higgins’s guide contains descriptions of 100
bed-and-breakfasts (B&Bs), 50 of them included for the first time.

Geographically, the B&Bs are spread fairly evenly over southern
Ontario, with fewer selections from the areas north of Parry Sound and
west of London. Big-city, small-town, and rural homes are included. Most
are restored Victorian or Colonial houses, but there are a few
exceptions, such as log homes, a former schoolhouse, a winterized 1970s
cottage, and a rambling house recently built from recycled materials.
For each, there’s an evocative sketch, all the necessary logistical
data (number of rooms and baths, phone, address, fees, etc.), and a
brief essay highlighting special features.

Higgins writes with enthusiasm of the decor, amenities, and meals
offered by the B&Bs. She is an avid champion of quality, cleanliness,
and the personal touches that add comfort and memories to a simple
overnight stay.

Her recommendations have integrity: this is one of the very few guides
in which B&B owners cannot purchase a listing.
