Review

David Booth and Larry Swartz need no introduction to elementary school
teachers of English. This revised version of Literacy Techniques... will
be an even more valuable resource than the original.

Based on the latest research on what constitutes effective teaching
practices, this guide contains a wealth of strategies, activities, and
assessment techniques. The eight general sections, each dealing with a
particular aspect of literacy (“Supporting Literacy Learners,”
“What’s in a Word,” “The Conventions of Language,” etc.),
contain a number of strategies. Each strategy begins with a brief
discussion of the issues and is followed by numerous practical,
ready-to-use ideas easily incorporated into any classroom. Samples, tips
for implementation, and ideas for assessment are all included.

Appendix 1 is a treasure trove of checklists, graphic organizers, word
lists, etc., all reproducible for classroom use. Teachers will find the
extensive list of suggested books for each division contained in
Appendix 2 particularly useful, from classics such as Where the Wild
Things Are and A Wrinkle in Time to more recent titles such as The Thief
Lord and Joseph Had a Little Overcoat. A bibliography of professional
resources is also provided, most copyrighted in 2000 or later.

Literacy Techniques... is a first-choice purchase for every elementary
school library’s “professional shelf.” Furthermore, many teachers
will want to add it to their personal collections.
