Review
This guide follows in the Lone Pine tradition of providing quality in
content, in visuals, in organization, and in physical attributes.
Like other Lone Pine guides, it is meant to be used in the
“field”—in this case, at the potting bench. The covers are
wipe-clean and water-resistant. The type style is large and clean, and
the organization logical, perhaps even instinctive.
The book starts with a primer on plant care, from providing the right
environment (light, humidity, temperature), through potting, watering,
fertilizing, and propagation, to treating insect infestations and
diseases. All types of houseplants are covered, including tropicals,
ferns, and succulents.
The bulk of the book is the alphabetical guide to 76 houseplants. For
each, Peters provides the common and scientific names, a description,
height and spread, care and growing tips, potential problems and pests,
recommended varieties, and several colour photos. This material is the
best available for identifying plants, selecting species that will
thrive in a specific home environment, and knowing how to keep each
plant at its best. The summary chart serves as a quick reference for
optimum light, soil, and humidity.
The photos are clear, sharp, and bright, emphasizing ease of
identifying the plants’ characteristics, whether foliage, blooms, or
both. The result is a cheerful, visually pleasing volume.
