Review

J.A. Kraulis captures Canada’s landscapes in all their magnificence
through his remarkable camera lens. Born in Stockholm, raised in
Montreal, and now living in British Columbia, this self-taught
photographer “is [in the words of the Vancouver Province] to
photography what the Group of Seven was to Canadian landscape
painting.”

This beautifully produced book presents brilliant reproductions of a
collection of Kraulis’s landscape prints of the last 20 years. The
accompanying text is in both English and French.

The photographs illustrate the extraordinary relationship and empathy
between Kraulis and his Canadian subjects from coast to coast: forests,
lakes, rivers, prairies, mountains, islands, icefields, fall colours,
bays and coves, waterfields, and farmers’ fields, to name but a few.
At times the breathtaking images of Canada’s incomparable natural
beauty and dramatic landscapes appear almost too exquisite to be real.
The overhead shots in particular could easily be mistaken for paintings.

Grand Landscapes of Canada is a superb compilation of incomparable
vistas that does this country proud.
