Review

Do not be deceived by the eye-catching title. You Don’t Need an MBA to
Make Millions is less concerned with revealing secrets to
entrepreneurial success than with bombarding the reader with platitudes
and truisms.

The book’s shopworn subject matter is telegraphed by chapter titles
like “Entrepreneurs … Born or Made?,” “Breaking New Ground,”
“War Stories,” “Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket,” and
“Lessons Learned the Hard Way.” “Fifty Tips for the Successful
Entrepreneur” features such predictable advice as make a great first
impression, dress for success, be punctual, improve your manners, and
use tax-free gift certificates as bonuses. In lieu of original insights,
readers are subjected to grandiose descriptions of the author’s
personal achievements.

The relatively few CEOs who go to the trouble of writing an
autobiography usually do so only at the end of their career when they
have something worthwhile to communicate. Despite the 13 endorsements by
leading CEOs, clergy, bankers, politicians, journalists, and an Olympic
medal speed skater, You Don’t Need an MBA to Make Millions is no more
impressive than Moore’s previous book, On the Move. He should wait
until retirement at least before publishing a follow-up volume.
