Review

Musician and photographer Bryan Adams lost a friend to breast cancer a
number of years ago and has since campaigned to raise money for, and
awareness of, the disease. American Women is Adams’s third book of
portraits of what he calls “important or famous” women who have
excelled in their respective fields. Proceeds from this effort will
support breast cancer research programs at Memorial Sloan-Kettering
Cancer Centre.

Adams’s first book benefited the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation
and featured Canadian women such as Shania Twain, k.d. Lang, and Pamela
Anderson. His second book, published in the United Kingdom, featured
Queen Elizabeth, the Duchess of York, Kate Moss, Joan Collins, Julie
Christie, and 42 other well-known British women. The subjects of
American Women were photographed mainly in New York and Los Angeles, and
include a cross-section of influential people ranging from Hillary
Clinton and tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams to media star Katie
Couric and musician Debbie Harry. The portraits are in black and white,
and the women wear Calvin Klein clothing.

Adams has captured something special in many of his subjects, and a
number of the portraits are stunningly beautiful.
