Review

Kevin Callan’s A Paddler’s Guide series has become an indispensable
tool for both novice and experienced canoe paddlers wanting to explore
the finest waterways Ontario has to offer. In this edition, Callan
guides readers along the spectacular lakes of Killarney Provincial Park
and the nearby historic French River Waterway.

From four-hour paddles on Osa Lake to a 10-day trip around The Big
Loop, Callan provides valuable information such as degree of difficulty,
number of portages, distance of longest portage, and access information.
Insightful descriptions of the various described routes whet the
appetite to take in the sights along the way. In addition, he offers
route variations that will result in longer or shorter trips, allowing
for maximum exploration opportunities for any given time frame.

But this is more than a guide for paddlers. Callan has also
thoughtfully included information about hiking opportunities around
Killarney as well as winter recreational offerings in the region. A
listing of area outfitters, guiding companies, and accommodations rounds
out the volume.

A must-have for anyone wanting to explore one of Ontario’s most
inviting outdoor regions.
