Review

The wild west coast of Vancouver Island from Barkley Sound to Estevan
Point includes some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Each
year more than a million visitors come to surf, kayak, watch whales,
hike the rain forest and shoreline trails, and marvel at the awesome
fury of the winter storms from the comfort of their oceanfront hotels
and B&Bs. Photojournalist Jacqueline Windh came for a summer in 1995 and
stayed, captivated by the area and its history. Working as a
sea-kayaking guide gave her the opportunity to explore further, observe
nature’s cycles through the changing seasons, and come to know the
people who make their homes and livings there. This beautifully crafted
coffee-table guidebook combines her outstanding colour photography with
a well-written, well-informed commentary for the enjoyment of visitors
and permanent residents alike.
