Review

Set mostly in Africa, the stories in this collection vary in style,
seriousness, and quality. Whether it be folktale, fantasy, or allegory,
Zeleza has a point to make about imperialism and racism, and their
effects on the individual. The Joys of Exile offers an interesting
insight into an Africa that is at once isolated and contaminated by the
rest of the world. The author writes capably, but the collection’s
sheer variety makes one wish for a more sustained style and vision.
