Review

This directory scores high points for comprehensiveness: it lists every
known bed-and-breakfast (B&B), tourist home, guest home, and small inn
in the provinces of Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick
and Nova Scotia—1300 in total.

All the logistics of address, phone number, cost, number of rooms and
baths, credit-card acceptance, and owners’ names are given for each
listing. These basics are supplemented with a brief note on the special
features (e.g, swimming pool, off-street parking), near-by attractions,
type of home (e.g., bungalow, historic home) and—for a surprisingly
large number of entries—Internet URL.

The book uses the Canada Select Accommodation ratings from one to five
stars to indicate the level of luxury. The listings are grouped by
province, then organized alphabetically by nearest town or city. This
system works well for the traveler looking for accommodation at a given
destination, but not so well if other criteria, such as the name of the
B&B or type of amenity, are used for selection purposes. An index of the
B&B’s by name and cross-reference listings by a few key features such
as waterfront, farm, antique furnishings, etc., would increase the
book’s appeal. The work is useful but basic. For travelers, it makes a
valuable starting point for locating a good night’s sleep, but will
probably not be the only B&B guide they will want to consult.
