Review

The sheer size of this new edition of John Schreiner’s popular guide
illustrates the extraordinary growth of the winemaking industry in
British Columbia over the past decade. With 126 entries, as compared to
40 in the 1994 edition, it has become a substantial tome encompassing
not only traditional wineries but also cideries and meaderies.

Each winery’s profile includes its history, entertaining biographies
of its owners and their experiences, recommended products, and a
black-and-white illustration of the winery’s label. Wine tourism is
encouraged. Maps show locations in the Okanagan, on Vancouver Island and
the Gulf Islands, and in the Lower Mainland, while the individual
profiles provide address, telephone number, website, and open hours for
the wine shop and other amenities. The wineries are arranged
alphabetically, with a table of contents and an index by winery and
owner names. An introductory essay on the development of B.C. wines from
forgettable plonk to international award winners over the past 30 years
offers explanations for the industry’s remarkable transformation based
on changes in grape varieties and climate. A must-have for wine lovers.
