Review

The Inside Passage extends 1,000 miles as the eagle flies, along the
coastlines of Puget Sound, mainland British Columbia, and the Alaskan
Panhandle from Seattle to Skagway. Protected from the open waters of the
Pacific by countless islands, including Vancouver Island and the Queen
Charlottes, it gives seagoing craft of all sizes relatively sheltered
access to some of the most spectacular wilderness scenery in the world
as well as the major population centres of Seattle and Vancouver, B.C.
It is a popular cruise-ship route from spring through fall, and pleasure
craft can explore its islands, bays, and fjords all year round.

This lavishly illustrated guide to the waterway outlines the route from
Olympia, Washington, northward in four stages: Puget Sound to Discovery
Passage; Discovery Passage to Queen Charlotte Sound; Cape Caution to
Prince Rupert; and Dixon Entrance to Skagway. Maps of each stage
identify the larger islands, waterways, and communities on the route.
More than 200 historical and professional-quality contemporary colour
photographs illustrate points of interest along the way, each
accompanied by a fact-filled caption sentence or paragraph. Additional
background information is presented in short essays on notable people,
places, wildlife, and historical events. Concise “fact boxes” give
statistics and other tidbits of information. Active and armchair
mariners alike will enjoy this informative guide as a trip planner,
enhancer, and souvenir.
