Now in its 6th edition, with 19 new trails added, this is the guidebook
for novice, non-expert, and family hikers living in or visiting the
Vancouver area. More than half the 62 hikes are within one hour’s
drive of Vancouver City Hall, but they range as far afield as Point Grey
to the west, Manning Park to the east, the Joffre Lakes near Pemberton
to the north, and Mount Baker in Washington State to the south. A
general introduction gives advice on clothing and equipment, planning
hikes for all seasons, walking techniques, hazards to avoid, and
survival skills.
The detailed guide for each hike begins with a map and some summary
information: round-trip distance in miles and kilometres; approximate
duration in hours; the best months or seasons for making the trip; and a
difficulty rating indicator based on the abilities of non-experts (easy,
moderately easy, or moderately difficult). Trips suitable for family
members of all ages are indicated. There are directions for reaching the
trailhead and detailed guidance for the trail itself, including
landmarks and points of interest along the way. Some descriptions
include a black-and-white photograph of a scene on the route. The guide
concludes with indexes of the hikes by name, duration in hours, and
level of difficulty, as well as a list of those with the “family”
designation. Hikers of all ages and abilities have been enjoying this
publication in its various editions for more than 25 years. It has stood
the test of time.
