Review

From America Sent relates the fictional account of a young chambermaid,
a farm girl from Pointe-aux-Roches, whose correspondence to Henry Miller
seems a rather flimsy excuse for 78 pages of text. Gervais’s writing
is clean and spare, but his idea runs out of steam early. The letters
lack a sustaining narrative; however, the main character often reveals
herself in an engaging manner.
