Review

Destination Nova Scotia offers readers striking visual images of the
maritime province’s natural beauty and scenic wilderness. Divided
according to the province’s seven tourist regions, most pages contain
a full-color photograph that highlights some aspect of the region’s
geographic, historical, or cultural uniqueness. An introductory map
orients the reader to some of the major cities and denotes the
geographic location of each of the region’s scenic drives.

While the book makes a lovely souvenir or gift item, its purpose is not
to offer preparatory reading for planning a visit to the province. You
will not find lists of places to stay, hours of operation of tourist
attractions, or ferry schedules and costs in this book. Instead,
Thompson provides a one-page summary of each region, short descriptions
to accompany each photograph, and a three-page introduction to the
province’s rich cultural history. The photographs are stunning and
will be a fond reminder of Nova Scotia for anyone who lives or vacations
there.

Alexa Thompson is a Halifax author, editor, and journalist. Albert
Lee’s photography has appeared in a number of major Canadian
publications. He notes in his preface that this book highlights a few of
his favorite Nova Scotian sites.
