Review
John “Gassy Jack” Deighton was one of Vancouver’s earliest and
most colourful entrepreneurs. The young city literally grew up around
him and his Globe Saloon. He was a legend in his own time, and the
legend continues to the present day as his statue presides over
Vancouver’s Gastown district. This volume of the Amazing Stories
popular-history series fills in the documented details of his life and
times, including the sometimes questionable business and political
activities of Jack and his associates as they clawed a living from the
wilderness. The book is an easy and entertaining introduction to
Vancouver’s early days.
