Peter Christensen is a horseman, a wilderness guide, a poet, and now, a
non-fiction writer. His life experiences—growing up with horses on a
farm in Alberta, working as a pack trail guide, and then as trail crew
for the National Park Service—qualify him well for telling a tale or
two about horsemanship.
In this collection of short pieces, Christensen shares interesting
stories not only about horses, but also about the people who work with
them. Of course there are encounters with wildlife that necessarily
remind us that in true wilderness, humans are on the menu. Succinct
observations are innocently hidden within the engaging text. Wisdom like
“Working with horses taught me more about people than working with
people.” Or, most importantly, “To live and work in the bush you
need by nature to be satisfied with silence.” The truthfulness is
striking.
Christensen has produced a well-written text that any horse lover and
wilderness enthusiast will thoroughly enjoy.
