Review

Hostelling North America, the official Hostelling International guide to
hostel accommodation in Canada and the United States, is divided into
three sections: an introduction providing general information on
hostels; Canada, arranged alphabetically by province; and the U.S.,
arranged alphabetically by state. Cities and towns with hostel
accommodation also appear alphabetically according to province/state.

The introduction, which appears in English, French, German, and
Japanese, contains all the general information a traveler considering
the use of hostels would require: how to make a reservation, information
on family or group accommodation, standard facilities, and hostel
customs and protocol. The guide provides information on membership
application plus the appropriate forms for Hostelling International,
H.I.-Canada, and H.I.-U.S. Youth Hostels. A mini-introduction to each
province and state lists helpful organizations (H.I. regional offices,
tourism offices, etc.) and discounts available to hostel membership
cardholders. The lists of hostels are easy to read: a highlighted area
uses standardized symbols to indicate prices, grades, facilities, and
special features such as lockers, kitchen access, and luggage storage. A
photograph and general description of each hostel are provided, along
with clear directions and a map illustrating location.
