Review
While fulfilling his role as host of CBC Radio’s Morningside,
Canada’s most popular broadcaster, Peter Gzowski, keeps his writing
skills honed by producing a monthly column for Canadian Living Magazine.
This collection of selected columns is as cozy and mellow as its author
has become in his “mature” years. Always a first-class wordsmith,
Gzowski combines his fine mastery of language and innate curiosity
regarding the world around him to describe large and small events in his
public and private lives.
His powers of observation are acute and add an abundance of detail and
description to his daily life. He finds humor, value, and meaning even
in the mundane, and is as eloquent about his love of cooking as he is
about his misadventures with “machines.” The divorce of his parents
and, later, the breakup of his own marriage are movingly recounted.
Gzowski has crossed Canada from coast to coast, from south to Far
North, both for Morningside and in his neverending quest to raise funds
for literacy through golf tournaments; among his finest columns are
those that describe life in the Far North and golf on ice.
Wood engravings by Gerard Brender а Brandis enhance this delightful
collection.
