Review

Artist/photographer Kim Ondaatje pays homage to the city of Toronto and
its environs through 127 remarkable photographs. Born and raised in
Toronto, where she lived for 35 years before moving to a farm in eastern
Ontario, Ondaatje brings deep understanding and sensitivity to her
collection of Toronto’s “natural, architectural, artistic and
spiritual treasures.”

In lieu of captions, Ondaatje provides commentary in four introductory
sections: Reflections, Special Places, Art, and Gardens. The
photographer claims no expertise as an architect or historian. Toronto,
My City is “just part of a personal record of what I saw and felt and
loved and nothing else.” Her astute eye and artistic vision are
evident in these striking images of Toronto’s (past and present)
buildings, neighborhoods, parks, islands, restaurants, churches, and
people.

Publisher Bob Hilderley, designer Keith Abraham, and printer Henry Yee
must also be commended for their contributions to this memorable and
esthetically exciting document of one of North American’s most diverse
and interesting cities.
