Review

Award-winning heritage artist and writer Michael Kluckner has his own
views about how history should be presented. “In the study of history
some will argue that only chronological is logical, but I believe that
human memory is much more anecdotal, and is triggered by recollections
of people, places, and events, rather than by dates.” It is this
philosophy that guided the organization of Vancouver the Way It Was,
first published in 1984. Historical narrative, biographies, and
anecdotes jostle comfortably together with archival photographs, old
postcards, and 42 of Kluckner’s own superb watercolors sprinkled
liberally throughout. The original edition has been revised twice, and
this latest edition includes the addenda. Covering the last 100 years of
Vancouver’s history, the book examines the major communities in the
downtown and residential areas. A detailed index of names and places
makes it a valuable reference source on Vancouver history as well as a
browser’s delight.
