Review

Few situations cause as much concern to new parents as the feeding of
their young child. Eleanor Brownridge, a professional dietitian, wrote
I’m Hungry in 1987 as a guide to nutrition for young children, but has
recently updated it in keeping with the newly released Canada’s Food
Guide.

The book deals with nutrition from birth through the preschool years.
While recommending breastfeeding, and providing much information in its
favor, Brownridge offers many suggestions to ensure healthy bottle-fed
babies, as well. She also provides extensive advice concerning kinds of
foods, when to introduce them, quantities to serve, number of servings
per day, and much more. Many difficult situations are anticipated (e.g.,
overindulgent grandparents, balky children, neighborhood birthday
parties) and coping mechanisms are suggested. As well, there are
sections dealing with allergies, vegetarianism, dental care, disabled
children, working parents, restaurant visits, and grocery shopping, all
written with the goals of good nutrition and the development of sensible
eating habits. Sample menus and suggested serving sizes, along with an
abundance of recipes (developed by a home economist), are provided
throughout the book to ensure that feeding is varied, interesting, and
stress-free.

Brownridge’s writing style conveys her relaxed attitude to
child-feeding. She encourages one to aim for the ideal, but discourages
inflexibility. She is realistic enough to know that in some
circumstances adapting is a wiser choice than adhering rigidly to a
preplanned idea or schedule. This practical guide will benefit new and
experienced parents alike.
