Review
Viticulture and wine making are relatively young industries in British
Columbia. Recognition on a national and international scale has come
only recently. The first (1994) edition of this guide grew out of the
author’s need to plan a B.C. wine tour, and her discovery that there
was no suitable guidebook available. This second edition includes 34
establishments from B.C.’s four major wine regions, and the 16-page
listing of their award-winning wines suggests that they are worthy of
serious exploration.
Arranged by winery name, the entries include an illustration of the
label; the winery’s address, telephone, and fax numbers; owners’ and
winemakers’ names; date of establishment; hours of operation; and
descriptive information about its history, operation, and products.
Schematic maps of B.C.’s chief wine-producing regions show winery
locations relative to one another; a local sketch map with directions
from the major access roads in the area accompanies each entry. Rounding
out the guide are a primer on 46 major wine grape varieties, their
characteristics, and suggested foods that pair well with them; a
glossary of wine terminology; and a bibliography for further reading.
This is a handy reference source on B.C.’s active wineries,
conveniently spiral-bound and sized to fit purse or pocket for trips to
the wine store or the wineries themselves.
