The Canadian Rockies

avid outdoor recreationist.

The first of these three offerings from Whitecap Books, Okanagan, blends
local color with human interest in its coverage of an area that is,
especially in summer, well populated with tourists. The photographs
reflect this blend, offering scenes of waterskiing, golfing, biking, and
beach-lazing interspersed with views of the trademark orchards and
vineyards.

The Canadian Rockies, presents a selection of photos from the mountain
range’s national parks. The photos provide a good sense of the place
and of the unusual light often found at high altitude. In addition to
the standard shot of Lake Louise with poppies in the foreground, the
book offers shots of Wilcox Pass in autumn, with carmine willow leaves
and lowering grey skies; first light on the summit of Mt. Rundle; and
fossil trilobites in the discard piles of the Burgess Shales.

Whistler offers scenes of the tarns and peaks of Garibaldi Park to
offset those of its namesake’s chief claim to fame: skiing and
aprиs-ski.

In general, the photographs in each of these books are well reproduced,
and their large format makes them easy to appreciate.
