Review

This fifth volume in the popular Best of Bridge series continues the
tradition of “simple recipes with gourmet results.” And Aces
includes a bonus: a combined index to all five volumes in the series as
well as its own index.

Nearly 200 new recipes, an intriguing mixture of innovation and
nostalgia, are grouped in three sections. The “Brunch ’n’ Lunch”
group includes muffins and quick breads as well as more substantial
fare. “Best Buffets” lays out a wide selection of appetizers, soups,
salads, and main dishes. “Baddies but Goodies” completes the buffet
with a tempting array of sweets.

The recipes include both standard and metric measures, and a conversion
table is provided for common weights, volumes, and temperatures. Methods
are clear and concise. Most main dishes and desserts serve four to six.

The book is attractively designed with a homey “hand-printed” text,
color photographs, and a liberal sprinkling of one-liners to brighten
the cook’s day.
