Review
This weighty tome has grown, in eight successive editions, from a tool
intended as a basic guide for students in Reference and related courses
in the Faculty of Library Science at the University of Toronto. That is
still the primary audience; however, its wider use in the field by
librarian practitioners is both recognized and acknowledged in the
formatting and coverage of successive editions.
This edition is significantly enlarged, and the word “basic” has
been dropped from the title to reflect the increased coverage. It is
divided into four major sections: General Reference, Humanities, Social
Sciences, and Science and Technology. Each section is subdivided into as
many as 14 subsections, and the complete work cites nearly 4000 titles
in 3000 annotated entries. In view of its ties to a major School of
Library and Information Science, the book’s bibliography is
impeccable, making it an indispensable library-science tool.
