Review
This is a revised edition of the atlas, first published in 1988. For the
most part revisions are minor, but they include a complete redrawing of
Plate 37, Rail and Water Transportation.
The atlas has five major sections: “setting the scene”; physical
geography; natural resources and related activities; human geography;
and economic geography. These are followed by a gazetteer, a glossary,
and a listing of sources. The gazetteer consists of four double-page
maps on the scale of 1:80,000, preceded by an index of places shown.
As is common these days, the 40 plates, depict material through
multiple frames, with maps, photographs, and graphs all being used to
compress a great deal of information into a small space. But legibility
is good and the cartography is helped by use of clear color and
occasional use of explicatory text. Topics covered range from prehistory
to satellite communications.
Judging from the introduction, a significant part of the market
addressed is in schools, and the price is low enough to suggest that the
atlas should have a ready acceptance there. But the lay public and the
professional geographer can also find plenty of useful and interesting
material here.
