On Citadel Hill, a cannon has been fired precisely at noon every day
since 1800. The Citadel, in the centre of downtown Halifax, is the
most-visited historic site in Canada. And it has one of the longest
histories. It was built in 1749, then rebuilt in 1761, again in 1799,
and yet again in 1828. Today it is being restored to the way it looked
during Victorian times, when it was at its most active. The Citadel’s
star-shaped site overlooking the Atlantic is unique in the world.
Tourists from around the globe stop in Halifax to explore this great
ironstone fortress and marvel at the unique architecture and massive
14-ton cannons. Royalty has been entertained there, “inspecting” the
actors who represent the battalions that populated the fort in the
mid-1800s.
Twenty-five full-color, full-page photographs and a brief but
informative text constitute this little book. It is sufficiently
detailed to answer most questions about the historic site, and the
photos are the perfect keepsake to take home from a visit to one of
Canada’s national treasures.
