Review
Schoemperlen’s short stories are slices of personal histories, ironic
portrayals mainly of losers in the game of love. Many centre on women
trapped in stale situations or involved in unsatisfying relationshps,
yet the stories are amusing, written with wit and a rather
self-deprecating sense of humor. These women don’t always take
themselves seriously, and can laugh at their foibles, especially in
matters of love. As in the title story, there is a recurring motif of
dreams, and of characters who live one life while dreaming of another.
Schoemperlen’s stories are like snapshots that capture the essence of
people’s characters.
