Review

This is another in a series meant to standardize public-service
terminology in French and English equivalencies. As such, it is
essential for Canadian writers, civil servants, and contractors doing
business with a bilingual government. There are 7000 entries with 2400
definitions, and a French–English glossary.

This work updates and extends eight specific glossaries published
between 1983 and 1985; it also contains sections dealing with work study
and quality control (but excludes financial management, which was
covered in 1987’s Budgetary, Accounting and Financial Vocabulary). The
bibliography contains some 60 lexicons. The National Library devoted
eight subject headings to this work.

However, when I showed this book to a French financial journalist based
in Paris, he said that many of the terms are stilted, and others are
simply not used (the French preferring many English terms). We seem to
have another example of French-Canadian language being more French than
the French.
