Review

1000 Islands is all that a coffee-table book should be: beautiful and
informative.

Photographed by the award-winning de Visser and written by
fourth-generation Kingston resident Fleming, this book is impossible to
put down and most inviting to reread frequently.

The extraordinary beauty and diversity of the 1000 Islands, and of the
surrounding towns in Canada and the United States, are superbly captured
and immortalized by de Visser’s photographs. He captures the activity
and serenity both of nature and of the area’s inhabitants in all four
seasons and at various times of day. His photographs are breathtaking
artistic canvases of light, shade, and color.

Fleming’s familiarity with the Islands and with the history of the
area—and the fact that she herself is a summer Islander—personalizes
and adds substance to her clear and concise text, which complements de
Visser’s artistry. It is a perfect collaboration of the visual and
intellectual appreciation of a glorious area of North America.

1000 Islands is a magnificent achievement to be savored and repeatedly
enjoyed.
