Review
More than a meal planner, this practical cookbook—obviously the work
of experienced and innovative campers—is well organized and amusing.
It includes valuable tips on traveling light that cover careful
planning, equipment checklists, and techniques for drying vegetables,
fruits, and even meat (help in drying campfood in advance is relatively
uncommon and very useful, since commercial packages of dried dinners for
one or two persons are expensive).
Bonnie McTaggart is a retired registered nurse and a nature enthusiast;
many years of camp cooking lie behind her recipes. Jill Bryant,
Bonnie’s daughter, is a Toronto writer and editor who loves the
outdoors and camps every summer. Chum McLeod, Bonnie’s sister, is an
experienced book illustrator, and her humorous and attractive line
drawings enliven the text.
Nicely produced, the book has a detailed table of contents and a
lengthy index. Relatively inexperienced campers would be well advised to
take this useful guide on their trip. Topics include campsite
preparations and clean-up as well as advance planning. Campfire meals
are one of the great pleasures of camping, and this book gives them the
attention they deserve.
