Review

This enjoyable book is a reprint of Beth Day’s 1957 account of her
stay with Jim and Laurette Stanton, a remarkable couple who lived for
more than 30 years in the wilds of British Columbia’s Knight Inlet.
The Stantons faced grizzlies, harsh winters, unsavory locals, and
travelers. Their story is as much a testament to human endurance and
strength as it is a tale of the rich wildlife found at the inlet. Day
draws the reader into the Stantons’ yearly struggles to make a living,
largely through such dangerous activities as hand-logging and trapping.
The fact that this resilient couple survived for so long amid such harsh
conditions is no doubt due to their unwavering respect for nature.
Grizzlies in Their Backyard is a must-read for those familiar with the
rugged, untouched coastline of British Columbia.
