Time in a Green Country lives up to the promise of its evocative title.
Philips captures the sensory impressions of a life lived on the
Prairies.
One feels the influence of the nineteenth-century English Romantic
poets in both style and content (there is even a reference to Shelley in
the book’s first suite of poems, “Florence Peake at Lodden,
1918”). Philips shares the Romantics’ love of nature, and creates
lyrical poems based on her own experience of a new continent and a new
century.
As she moves effortlessly between past and present, prose and verse,
Philips constantly reminds the reader of the mutual influences of nature
and time. Her command of language and cadence is so sure that one reads
her verse almost as effortlessly as prose. A fine collection of lyric
poetry, and a young woman’s unique paean to the Prairies, Time in a
Green Country should not be missed.
