Review

Stop Auto Repair Rip-off is a handy primer for the car owner who has
little or no idea of automobile workings, yet who has experienced the
pain of excessive or, at worst, unnecessary repair bills. Its authors
firmly believe that when it comes to one’s car, some preventive
maintenance and timely second opinions can save time, money, and the
stress of temporarily doing without essential transportation.

The guide’s first two sections are devoted to the basics: choosing a
repair shop, preventive maintenance, and recognizing likely repairs. The
maintenance section is particularly informative and well laid out;
explanations are given in non-technical language, and warnings are set
off from the text in sidebars, for quick reference. The third section
focuses on such extras as body shops, towing, and tires.

Motorists who desire enough rudimentary knowledge about their cars to
help them avoid the types of scams that disreputable repair outlets or
mechanics can foist on the unwary will be well served by this book.
