Review

Joanne Kates, food critic for The Globe and Mail, can make or break a
restaurant. This guide is vintage Kates. Restaurants are listed
alphabetically by category (Brunch, Closed Sunday, Open for Dinner Only,
etc.) and by type (Bistros, Cajun and Creole, Cheap and Cheerful, etc.).
Each of the establishments listed is accompanied by practical
information (e.g., address, telephone number, credit-card acceptance,
hours, wheelchair accessibility, allergy awareness) and a separate
review. The eateries under examination range from Forkchops (noodle fast
food) to establishments owned and/or serviced by such gastro-stars as
Michael Stadtlander (Eiginsinn Farm), Susur Lee (Lotus), Mark McEwan
(North 44), and Greg Couillard (Sanona). Prices per meal are approximate
(and not always given).

Kates is a first-class wordsmith and her guide is a most enjoyable
read, particularly for Torontonians who are familiar with the
restaurants being reviewed. Those in search of a practical and
user-friendly guide to Toronto’s restaurants will find it here.
