Review

This encyclopedic guide to bargain hunting in Vancouver clearly meets a
need. The first printing (June 1995) sold out in less than three months.
The second printing (September 1995) has addenda sections throughout,
and an addendum to the index, reflecting the constantly changing
marketplace. Both authors are dedicated bargain hunters who have spent
13 years researching, writing, and educating shoppers to seek out and
recognize the “best buys” when they find them. Bargain-hunting tips
are scattered through the volume, identified by a change-purse icon. The
book is organized in nine broad market sectors (e.g., clothing, food,
home and garden). More than 1000 stores and service outlets are
represented. Each entry includes the address, telephone number, fax
number (where available), hours of opening, policy on accepting cheques
and credit cards, and a description of the stock, discounts, and regular
sales of note. There is a single comprehensive index by store name,
types of goods, type of store or service, and (especially worth noting)
an entry for outlets offering discounts to seniors. A “must-have”
reference book for canny shoppers in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.
