Review

Canadian managers, professionals, and executives seeking excellent job
search advice should look no further than this excellent career
transition guide. The authors, both of whom work with an outplacement
firm, cover all the bases: managing finances, understanding your
reaction to change, assessing your strategic advantage, defining what
you want from your job and organizational culture, interview
preparation, and negotiating salary.

Each of the book’s five sections contains well-constructed
self-discovery exercises, examples, and tip summaries. The marketing
section, for example, presents various résumé styles (including the
executive full biography, the abbreviated biography, the one-page
executive résumé, and the traditional two-page résumé) and provides
advice on brochures, Web sites, and business cards. Stories of real
people managing complex career challenges enliven the text throughout.

While most career transition books end at the job offer, this one
provides advice on managing the probationary period for the first 90
days. It’s Your Move is not a job search primer for dummies. It is a
smart guide for smart people who want to manage their career transition
strategically with thoughtfulness, integrity, and maximum effectiveness.
