Review

Job loss is one of life’s top stressors. Get Back to Work! presents a
step-by-step process that promises to help you find your next job fast.
Context is provided in the first two chapters (“Taking Control of Your
Transition” and “Finding Your Best Fit”), while subsequent
chapters deal with resume-writing, launching your marketing campaign,
acing the interview, and negotiating salary.

The book has two main drawbacks. First, it doesn’t offer enough
practical information (the chapter on résumé writing, for example,
describes the importance of having a plain text résumé but doesn’t
explain how to create one that works). Second, it fails to show the job
seeker how to stand out. The cover letter example proves the point with
its opening line: “Please accept this letter and resume as my
application for the position of …” Managers see this line a million
times, and job seekers who use it are going to sound average.

Get Back to Work! gets you started on the right foot, but then leaves
you to navigate the complexities of the job search on your own.
