Review

Calgary is well served by this book. The author, having consulted
sources at the Glenbow Museum, the Public Library, the City of Calgary
Archives, and military and educational institutions, has done an
excellent job of identifying the people associated with Calgary place
names.

The place names come from many sources: names of aboriginal peoples
(e.g., Crowchild), early settlers (e.g., Cross), educators (e.g.,
Oakley), individuals important in Canadian history (e.g., Macleod), and
oilmen (e.g., McMahon), among others. The information is presented

in alphabetical order, with each entry identifying the geographical
location and including a brief annotation about the name. The book
concludes with a subject index and a selected bibliography.

In identifying the people whose names adorn the public buildings,
bridges, parks, schools, streets, and subdivisions of Calgary, the
author has provided Calgarians and visitors with a valuable source of
information about the city and an excellent addition to the toponymonic
literature of Alberta.
