Review

The author’s definition of “Atlantic Canada” is generous. France
might actually consider it generous to a fault, as it includes Saint
Pierre and Miquelon, as well as Newfoundland, Labrador, Prince Edward
Island, Nova Scotia, the Magdalens, New Brunswick, the Gaspé, and the
Lower St. Lawrence.

The book is a directory and guide to small country accommodations
throughout this region. The criteria for inclusion included peace,
tranquility, and charm; there’s an emphasis on something called
“niceties.” Niceties could mean pure cotton sheets, air conditioning
courtesy the Atlantic ocean, a fireplace, or well water. There are no
points given for telephones, televisions, and other modern noisemakers.

Each area is introduced with a short description that blends history,
geography, and tourist information. Within each area, the individual
accommodations each receive two pages of data and description. There’s
a full address and phone number, a pen-and-ink sketch of the building,
logistics (number of rooms, price range, services, rulings on smoking,
pets, and children), and a generous description that might touch on
scenery, architecture, decor, food, owner’s background, local
attractions, or anything else that caught the author’s interest. For
the traveler who wants to get away from the conformity of the chain
motels and experience some maritime tranquility, Comforts of Home has
much to offer.
